Oh solo travel! Intimidating for many and a must for others. Traveling solo is arguably one of the most freeing things you can do. While I love and miss my favorite travel partner when I travel alone, it allows me to connect with myself in a whole different way. Also, what’s not great about being able to do whatever the hell you want!? Sleep in late and skip breakfast? Never leave the resort? Go spend hours walking around town with no plan in mind? The world is literally your oyster.
For women safety is always a question that pops into our minds, immediately following the “wow that would be so cool” you get the “ugh but it’s probably not safe to be by myself”. It’s unfortunate but it’s the world we live in. It is however something we need to be mindful of at home as well, so we can’t let this fear get in the way of us living our lives.
There are many articles out there on the best places to travel solo, but honestly it’s largely dependent on your travel style. So we’ve curated a list of the best destinations to travel as a solo female that are safe and aligned to a specific travel style. Let’s get started!
1.The Relaxed Traveler
You’re the kind of lady who’s looking for a recharge and time by a pool with someone supplying you with sparkling rose. You’ll want some spa time, and some leisurely activities, but nothing to strenuous or with too much fuss as you want to leave feeling like you’re floating on a cloud.
Where to go: Sicily, Italy (Taormina)
Sicily is the Italian coast’s quieter sister. While still experiencing all Italy has to offer you get a more laid back version, with some wonderful opportunities to relax in the sun or take a leisurely stroll around town.
Where to stay: Villa Carlotta
Where to stay: Donna Carmela
What to do:
- If staying at Donna Carmela, hire a car to take you into Taormina for the day and explore the streets of the gorgeous town.
- Visit Mount Etna and join one of the many excursions great for solo travelers. Go-Etna will pick you up from the hotel.
- Do a wine tasting. Sicilian wine is incredible (though we can’t be surprised by this). Specifically the land around Etna which is still an active volcano produces wonderful grapes
- Eat at Bell’Assai Taormina overlooking the coastline
- Have dinner at Trattoria Tiramisu or La Tavernetta Taormina
2. The Adventurer (or a mix of both)
So you like to have something to do. You’re not the person who can spend the whole day by the pool or at the spa and I get it. You want a place where you can feel safe to explore and really immerse yourself in the culture.
Where to go: Costa Rica
Where to stay: Rio Perdido
What to do:
- Spend some time lounging in the hot springs on the reserve
- Go hiking, zip-lining, or white water tubing through the jungle
- Take a floating tour through the Pal Verde National Park
- Indulge in a gourmet chocolate tour at La Anita Rainforest Ranch
Where to go: New Zealand (Queenstown)
Where to stay: Hotel St. Moritz Queenstown
Located in the heart of Queenstown with stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables, offers a blend of natural luxury, warm hospitality, and modern comforts
What to do:
- Explore Mt Aspiring National Park
- Take a helicopter ride over the glaciers for a unique and memorable experience
- Hike the Routeburn track up to Harris Saddle
- Go on a safari on the Dart River
3. The Luxury Traveler
So you’re wanting high-end experiences while valuing comfort, privacy, and personalization. You’re not afraid to indulge in the finest accommodations, world-class dining, and unparalleled service, while doing so with a sense of sophistication and discernment.
Where to go: Zermatt, Switzerland
Where to stay: Backstage Hotel Vernissage
What to do:
- Spend the day skiing followed by a soak in the hot tub and lounging in the downstairs spa area
- Pop into some local bars – highly recommend Elsie’s Wine Bar and make sure to try the Glühwein
- Ride the Gornergrat train for breathtaking views
- Have lunch in the Igloos – best to ski to them vs trying to hike in Winter. Fresh snow fall makes the trail very difficult to get to
4. The Budget Friendly Traveler
You’re someone who is resourceful, adventurous, and mindful of their spending, but still seeks memorable and enriching experiences. You know how to maximize your budget without sacrificing the essence of the destination, and you value practicality, flexibility, and the satisfaction of discovering authentic and affordable experiences.
Where to go: Porto, Portugal
Where to stay: Village by BOA
Things to do:
- Watch the sunset from Jardin de Morro
- Stroll around Palácio de Cristal for beautiful views over the river
- Go to Manteigaria for the best pastel de Nata in town
- Visit the World of Wine Museum
